THOMAS L. JOHNSON of Asheville, NC is a librarian emeritus form the University of South Carolina (South Caroliniana). Among his previous books are two prize-winning volumes of vintage photographs-Camera Man's Journey (2002), A True Likeness (1986 and 2019; Lillian Smith Book Award, 1987)-and a collection of poetry (The Costume, 2011). He is a life member of the board of governors of the South Carolina Academy of Authors. The photographer Miranda Johnson is his daughter.
